The Tenth Good Thing About Barney

line The Tenth Good Thing About Barney
by Judith Viorst (Author), Erik Blegvad (Illustrator)

“A tale of loss and grieving”

A little boy has a pet cat called Barney. One day his pet cat died. He was very sad. So his mom told him that they should have a funeral for Barney. And at the funeral, the little boy can say 10 good things about Barney. The little boy goes to bed and thinks about what he should say.. but he can only come up with 9… Until after the funeral when the boy helps his father out at the garden, they discover a very important 10th good thing about Barney.

A super simple story by Judith Viorst about loss from a child’s perspective. One can easily relate to the little boy’s broken heart and how he grieves over his much loved cat. This is a wonderful story to read to children to discuss feelings of loss when there is a death. It helps parents understand how to explain loss to the really young ones.

After all, death is just as natural as life.
